What is galectin-3?
Galectin-3 is a widely studied and recognized protein biomarker that has been shown to play an important role in the progression of heart failure (HF). Expression of galectin-3 has been associated with the epithelium and inflammatory cells including macrophages, neutrophils and mast cells. When the cardiac muscle is damaged, an inflammatory response is triggered. Galectin-3 is expressed by activated macrophages and induces cardiac fibroblast proliferation and deposition of collagen. This collagen is inherent in myocardial fibrogenesis, excessive scarring (fibrosis) and adverse cardiac remodeling.1
