Pieter Muntendam, MD
President and CEO

Pieter Muntendam, MD, is a bio-pharmaceutical and healthcare executive with 20 years of business experience ranging from multinational corporations to early stage enterprises. He received his MD from Leiden University in The Netherlands, where he began his career with Organon International and went on to hold key roles in some of the world’s largest pharmaceutical firms. As Vice President of Care Management at Glaxo Wellcome (now GlaxoSmithKline), Dr. Muntendam was responsible for the development and implementation of its entry strategy within the field of care and disease management. Previously he was Vice President of Research and Development, International, and a member of the Board of Directors for two Johnson & Johnson operating companies. Most recently he led the Bio-Pharmaceutical and Healthcare practice at NetNumina, a professional services company focused on leveraging information technology to improve biopharma yield and efficiency. Dr. Muntendam’s extensive experience with early stage companies includes founding health management firm ProMedex, acquired by SHPS in 2004; and co-founding a subsidiary of Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Vitivity, where he served as Vice President of Medicine.

Stephen A. Martin, PhD
Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer

Prior to joining BG Medicine, Dr. Martin was Senior Director of the Discovery Proteomics & Small Molecule Research Center (DPSM RC) at Applied Biosystems in Framingham, Massachusetts. This research group was formed at the beginning of 2000, initially focusing on Proteomics (Proteomics Research Center). The team focused on developing complete workflows with collaborators in a variety of applied markets, identifying gaps in these approaches and conducting basic research to better understand the key technologies that would revolutionize these fields. Prior to forming the Research Center, Dr. Martin was responsible for Research and Development in Mass Spectrometry and Chromatography. He joined PerSeptive Biosystems in 1994, which was later acquired by Applied Biosystems.

Before joining Applied Biosystems, Dr. Martin was a member of the Structural Biochemistry Department at Genetics Institute, Inc. in Cambridge, Massachusetts (now Wyeth Pharmaceuticals) from 1989-1994. From 1980-1989, he had a number of roles associated with the Department of Chemistry at MIT, including Assistant Director National Institutes of Health Mass Spectrometry Facility, Visiting Scientist, Postdoctoral Associate and graduate student. From 1986-1988, Dr. Martin was an Assistant Professor at the Medical University of South Carolina in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. He received his BA in Chemistry from Boston University in 1980 and his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from MIT in 1984.

Robert N. McBurney, PhD
Senior Vice President, Research & Development and Chief Scientific Officer

Dr. McBurney joined BG Medicine following his position as Founder, President and CEO of Differential Proteomics, Inc., a start-up proteomics company. He also formerly held the positions of President of CeNeS Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Chief Scientific Officer and then President of Cambridge NeuroScience, Inc. (CNSI). While at CNSI, he led the team that discovered CNS 1102, a candidate drug that limits brain damage due to cerebral vascular accidents. Dr. McBurney oversaw multiple additional drug discovery and development projects including: the discovery and advancement into Phase II clinical trials of CNS 5161, a drug to treat neuropathic pain; the discovery and commencement of clinical trials of a novel brain-imaging agent (CNS 1261); and, the discovery and pre-clinical development of GGF2, a protein therapeutic for the treatment of multiple sclerosis. Dr. McBurney's former academic positions include: Assistant Director of the Medical Research Council Neuroendocrinology Unit (UK); Reader in Neurobiology at the Medical School of the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (UK); Florey Fellow of the Royal Society in Sir Alan Hodgkin's laboratory at Cambridge University (UK); Visiting Associate in Neurophysiology at the NIH (USA); and, the Benjamin Meaker Visiting Industrial Professor in the Medical School at Bristol University (UK). Dr. McBurney has authored over 90 publications. He holds a B.Sc. and a Ph.D. from the University of New South Wales.

Mark D. Shooman
Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Shooman joined BG Medicine in May 2007. Prior to joining BG Medicine he was with ONI Medical Systems where he was Chief Financial Officer.  Mark Shooman served as Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer of Clinical Data, Inc., a publicly held rapidly growing worldwide leader in pharmacogenomics and medical diagnostics from 2003 to 2006.  He also served as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of ADE Corporation, a semiconductor equipment company for which he coordinated an initial public offering and follow-on offering.  Mr. Shooman has over fifteen years experience in public accounting and holds a BSEE degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an MBA from The Ohio State University, and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Stacie Rader
Vice President, Human Resources

Prior to joining BG Medicine, Ms. Rader was Vice President at Flagship Ventures and Vice President, Human Resources, of NewcoGen since 1999.  During her tenure with Flagship she has consulted with numerous portfolio entities on HR operational issues. Stacie has particular expertise in team building, staffing, and organizational development as well as compensation and benefits design and implementation. Prior to Flagship Ventures, she was Corporate Director of Worldwide Employment and Staffing for Applera Corporation (now Applied Biosystems) following the merger of Perkin Elmer and PerSeptive Biosystems in 1998. Stacie was responsible for all Human Resources functions at PerSeptive from 1992 to 1998.  During this period, she oversaw the hiring of 600 global employees and the implementation of core HR processes and programs as well as equity and compensation structures to accommodate the company’s rapid growth. She was also a key member of corporate due diligence teams for a number of PerSeptive acquisitions and was instrumental in the integration and assimilation process for the PE-PerSeptive merger and held an interim VP, Human Resources role at Celera Genomics. Stacie holds a B.S. from Babson College.

Aram Adourian, PhD
Vice President, Computational Sciences

Dr. Adourian joined BG Medicine from the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While at MIT, he served as Project Manager for Bioinformatics specializing in the development of novel systems and approaches for biomolecular sequencing, analysis and modeling. Dr. Adourian earned his PhD at Harvard University in Statistical Physics, where he was a recipient of the Rudenberg Research Prize, and received his undergraduate degree in Physics from Cornell University.

Rene Myers, PhD
Vice President, Strategic Alliances

Dr. Myers came to BG Medicine from Biotage AB (formerly Pyrosequencing) where she was Vice President, Technology and Support. Rene held both scientific and business development roles during her tenure at Biotage and played an integral role in identifying and fostering strategic relationships at key accounts and developing new sales channels into targeted clinical research. Prior, Rene was with Applied Biosystems as a managing scientist on the PNA Research and Development team, Schleicher and Schuell,Inc. as a managing Sr. Scientist and Verigen Inc. She received her Ph.D. from the Ohio State University and a BS from Heidelberg College.

Gregg Mayer
Vice President, Diagnostic Strategy

Mr. Mayer joined BG Medicine in May 2007, bringing over 20 years experience as a lifescience executive at leading medical products companies.  Most recently, Mr. Mayer was Chief Business Officer at Interleukin Genetics, a developer of specialty genetic tests. Prior to Interleukin, Mr. Mayer was Vice President, Strategic Marketing and Corporate Communications at EPIX Pharmaceuticals, an innovator in magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents, where he managed the company's lead product development program.  During his EPIX tenure, Mr. Mayer  was elected Chairman of the Medical Imaging Contrast Agent Association and led industry initiatives on U.S. regulatory and reimbursement policy.  Before EPIX, Mr. Mayer was Worldwide Marketing Manager, Immunodiagnostics at Chiron Diagnostics (now part of Siemens Medical Solutions Diagnostics) where he planned and managed the development and global launch of more than 30 in vitro diagnostic products in reproductive endocrinology, cardiovascular disease, thyroid function, and other disease areas.  He was subsequently U.S. Director of Marketing at Chiron and was responsible for the development and execution of commercial strategy for new immunodiagnostic assays and laboratory systems.  Mr. Mayer began his career in sales with Abbott Diagnostics, and eventually joined Abbott's TDx Business Unit where he led portfolio strategy for in vitro transplant immunosuppression and therapeutic drug monitoring diagnostic products.   Mr. Mayer holds an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management and a BBA from The University of Texas at Austin.
